Talk to your insurance company. They may choose to include a rider for the dog (at additional premium cost to you). Or they may choose not to cover the dog, in which case you’ll bear 100% responsibility for the dog’s actions.

If your insurance agent asks what kind of dog you have, just tell them it is a basenji mix or just a mixed breed.

I’m sure the dog will be very sweet as that’s exactly how pit bulls are when they are raised right.

Think about it. How exactly do you KNOW she’s 2% pitt? That means, her exact ancestry has been catelogued back six generations, you know exactly what all those parents were? I seriously doubt it.

Usually if they’re 1/8 – meaning, ONE of their great grandparents was pitt – they won’t accept them. If she LOOKS like a pitt, they won’t take her. If she doesn’t look like a pitt, she’s not a pitt – she’s a mutt.

PS, MOST pitts are sweet as can be – until they turn and rip someone’s face off. That’s why they’re prohibited – UNPROVOKED, unexpected attacks. You’re MUCH MUCH safer getting a purebred pitt as a puppy, than taking on an adult pitt mix with unknown history and emotional baggage.

Will your homeowners insurance cover your dog if it is 2% pit bull. The short answer is yes, unless you specifically signed an animal exclusion excluding coverage for any pet which is deemed a "malicious breed." If you signed this exclusion form, then there would be no coverage for this pet. If you did not sign the exclusion form, then there would be coverage. Most insurance companies are not interested in insuring households with German Shepherd, pitbull, doberman, etc. However, I am not aware of anything in the actual policy which specifically excludes coverage for certain types of dog breeds. Also understand that if your insurance company discovers that you a "malicious dog breed" they have the capability of non-renewing your policy. I recommend contacting your agent to discuss this with them, I have heard of companies making exceptions for older pets.

Give me a break…when I adopted my beagle I never even thought about my homeowners insurance. If you have to ask then may be the shelter is the best place for the dog. Yikes!
