1. Require you to buy car insurance only if you choose to drive a car.
Only as a condition of driving.
2. You are only required to buy insurance to protect the person you hit, not yourself.
Health insurance mandates: Require you to buy health insurance as a condition of what?
As a condition of being a U.S. resident.
You are forced against your will to purchase something with your own money for your own benefit.

They’re repeating their DNC motivational speakers and making ignorant statements.

I can’t figure that out either.
I did like the earlier poster, using the twisted health care logic, who said that the starving should be forced to buy food or face fines, penalties and jail time.
That parallels more closely what this dopey bill is about.

You know what would solve this? Universal health care.
Otherwise, I don’t care if you don’t want to buy health care, but don’t even think about going to the ER when you have a heart attack. How hypocritical that would be…

Because they think many people are stupid enough to believe it is a legitimate comparison. I wouldn’t be surprised if 1/3 of all people are in fact that uninformed. The similarity doesn’t go much beyond car insurance and health insurance both having the word "insurance."

Again you are so correct. I also agree that to be a US resident you should take care of your own house and stop being a Nanny Nation.

It’s the same as giving people a false sense of security that if everyone has health coverage no one will die.

I wonder if they would also approve of doubling or tripling health insurance rates for people who have a high rate of insurance claims, just like the auto insurance industry works.
No.. they’ll conveniently leave out that comparison aspect. The auto insurance industry actually functions like "insurance" is intended to and for the most part people are treated fairly though it can vary by provider. But hey, at least you can easily switch to a different provider that does treat its customers well. If only health insurance could be sold across state lines so that we could have many more options.

Nope, because if you can’t pay for your emergency treatment, then we’re forced to pick up the tab. That’s why. So it’s not only to protect yourself. It’s to protect everyone else as well. And yes, "as a condition of being a U.S. resident" describes it very well. You’re not forced to be a U.S. resident, so if you don’t like it, get out (in other words).

The insurance companies are making a killing right now. So even a mandate would be marginally better, because Obama is not in a position to introduce a Canada typesystemm, he’s lacking votes. Under these circumstances the government should be allowed to compete, and very strict price controls should be imposed on the insurance leeches
