Each company is regulated by a state insurance commission, and each state may have different regulations. I asked a similar question when my husband needed extensive health care—I asked the nursing home where he lived for awhile which company was easiest to deal with. They really could answer that question fast! Term life is a little different. First of all, do you belong to an affinity group, union, et al that has insurance for its members? Then check with the local Better Business Bureau to ask which companies have had the most complaints filed against them. Also, you might be able to get information from the consumer division of your state’s commerce division—they usually regulate insurance. Another area to explore is your state’s attorney general’s office. Even if these offices cannot give you information, they should be able to tell you where you should go. They might also want you to give them names of specific companies, so you might want to narrow possibilities to six or seven.
