Animals are usually considered property, but it might vary by state. See if you can purchase an insurance rider, similar to what you do if you specifically insure valuables such as diamonds, etc.

It is really hard to get. Insurance companies won’t take on something that has the odds of them having to pay out. All you can do is keep calling different companies. Or get rid of it.

try lloyds of london. they will insure anything. in the meantime, why the hell do you need a pit bull!? if you need insurance to own a dog maybe you are getting the wrong dog. think about it.

Years ago, we had our home owners insurance cancelled because we had a German Shepard mix. Unfortunately, all insurance companies have a list of dog breeds they deem to be "uninsurable". They don’t make these lists public, and few insurance companies carry the same list. Their liability for a dog bite is too great. We relisted our dog as a hound mix (she was part hound) and we had our policy reinstated. What a pain in the ass that was!

There are legal outlets that can help you get around this. Check with your local humane society. They might be able to offer references. How sad is it that anyone would have to think about insurance liabilities when adding a new furry family member.
