The insurance company is doing their due diligence to make sure that there wasn’t fraud or suicide involved. 3-6 weeks is about right. The way you describe the accident, this may be quicker. Remember the service you receive at the time of a claim when you are shopping for your own insurance agent.

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you are working with a financial planner to manage this lump sum most effectively.

OK, just because it’s in the contestable period, doesn’t mean the insurance company WILL contest it.

If they don’t, it takes 3-6 weeks for the beneficiary to get their money. It’s paid as per the beneficiary clause – how the policy owner wanted it to be paid.

If they do, likely you’ll be waiting up to 6 months, for the medical records and review of the original application. If it is determined there was a "material misrepresentation" (aka, lie or ommission) on the application, the premium will be refunded to the owner of the policy, and the beneficiary won’t get anything.
