This really depends on your driving record and your credit. You will pay through the nose no matter who you go with if you have a DUI or a mass of speeding tickets. Companies like Progressive and GEICO specialize in cheap insurance, which is nice if you are a safe driver and just want coverage to stay legal. However, if you have a wreck or a problem, they will drop you or jack up your rates and look for any reason they can to not pay your claim. Companies like Allstate and State Farm are more expensive monthly, and usually ask for a hefty down payment, but they are less likely to drop you in times of trouble.
And don’t be fooled. You do pay for "accident forgiveness." Accident forgiveness is essentially insurance for your insurance policy. By paying an extra $X per month, you keep them from raising your rates in case of an accident.
