They should get a combination of policies.
They will need a large face amount for a number of years should he croak so term is the way to go. Probably 200K to 300K.
That is fairly inexpensive to buy but decreases in time or the premiums get larger.
They should also look at Universal or Whole life to have some insurance which becomes "paid up " at 65.
It will gain cash value and can be borrowed against for those unexpected eventualities later like job loss or a house emergency like a tree through the roof. Maybe something in the 100K range.
Cover all the bases with high payouts when the kids are small with a paid up residual amount for retirement and funeral expenses.

Allstate is pretty good, I had them for years before marrying my hubby now who is in the Army we have USAA and I love them and there rates
