Luka – Congrats on getting out (and thanks for your service!).
Buying health insurance can seem a bit intimidating, but it really needn’t be. Here’s a few tips:
1. Stick w/ the top insurance companies (Blue Cross, Aetna, Humana, Cigna, etc.). There are a lot of "lower quality" plans & companies around that look good on paper, but this is too important to get "suckered" into a plan that won’t pay well when you need it most (after a B-I-G $$ claim).
2. Buy a plan with a large deductible ($2,500 or even $5,000/year). Sure, that’s a lot of money to come up with if you have a bunch of medical bills, but you’re sorta’ gambling that you won’t have too many (besides doctor & drugs, which will usually have separate copays, meaning you won’t even have to pay the deductible first). What you’re really doing is trading a lower fixed expense (the premium) in exchange for a potentially higher variable expense. Remember: you have to pay the monthly premium, but your actually medical expenses (doctors, drugs, tests, hospital visits, etc.) are only paid IF you have some health care.
3. The point of any insurance is to help you in case you have a large, unexpected financial loss of some kind. Look at it this way: your car insurance company doesn’t pay for oil changes, new tires, or that brake job – those are routine maintenance you pay for; but, if a tree falls on your car, that’s when you need the insurance to step up (hey, I don’t have 25k for a new car, either).
If you want some additional help on this, visit:
1. http://www.acforrest.com (my website; get free quotes on your own, or click the "live talk")
2. http://www.nahu.org/consumers/findagent.cfm (NAHU is the professional association of brokers, like me, who specialize in health insurance; this will let you find one in your area to talk with).
Hope this helps a bit…
