My brother-in-law has two pit bulls, and we live in NJ. He was recently notified by his home owners that they do not cover them and once his policy runs out they are not renewing…Can anyone that has these dogs and an agency that covers them please let me know. Thank you.

I’m with American Family and they have the same policy that your brother-in-law has. They will not insure if you have certain breeds because of the high risk.

Some home owner’s insurance is specific about dogs considered "dangerous". My landlords have it on the house I’m in and it covers pits, rotties, and staffies. Its horrible because I’m not allowed to have any of these dogs as long as I rent here, but some insurances just charge extra for this because they think these dogs will go nuts. Its wrong, but I suppose the reserve the right to do this.

I’d talk to the insurance company and see if the ban can be lifted if the dogs have their Canine Good Citizen certificates, and then work on getting those.

    Good luck!

This really makes me sad. The pitt bull breed has been victimized because of a few stupid people that have trained pitt bulls to be killers. I have worked with animals for 10 years and have been privileged to work with some very sweet pitt bulls. I even owned two of them, both are deceased due to old age but what great pets they were. They loved my children. I own my home and am insured through all-state home owners insurance. I now own a rottweiler which is another breed that is being stereo-typed. Tell your brother good luck.

I work for an insurance broker and it is hard to find companies that will insure homes that have a "dangerous" breed on the property. Your brother will have to call around and see if he can find anyone to cover him. Usually there is someone but he will most likely have to pay a higher price because the more expensive companies are usually the ones that will insure that type of dog, not saying that his dogs are mean but a lot of insurance companies have said no to them just like a couple of companies we deal with will not insure someone if there is a tampolin without a net on the property. More area for damage to be done and more they will have to pay out. Good luck and I know it sucks.

I don’t know if they do homeowners insurance policies, but you might want to check into a company called Sportsman. They insure LOTS of the dog clubs in the Midwest.

I also would contact AmStaff rescue. http://www.amstaff.org/

No doubt the easiest way to get insurance quotes is on the web.
Why would you waste your time on the phone calling around?
the last time i needed quotes on insurance i used one of these comparison sites and it was great.
this is the site i used and it was quick like less than 5 mins.
The last thing I want to do is listen to elevator music while waiting for a salesman.
Anyway I got good quotes and ended up saving money so I was happy.
So shop around and compare quotes which is easy on the net.
Good starting point is at this site.
