hi, im 16, and plan on getting a motorcycle in about 4 years when im 20. im also planning on starting on a 600 and i know so far that if ur about 20 years old (really young) and you have a 600cc bike that your will be around 00-00 a year. so my questions are at what age does the price get lower and if those numbers are true then i will most likely start on a 250 and wat is the for a 250 a year.

when the time comes ill see if im able to pay 2000k a year

thanks

I don’t know where you are, but in Ontario you are looking at more like $4,000 or more for full coverage on a 600cc sportbike for the first year. Taking an approved riding course can lower the rate a lot, since some companies will give you the rate you would pay in your second year. I had one student–male, under 25, Yamaha R6–who took the course to reduce his premium from $6,000 to $3,800. Pretty good value for a $350 course, and he got to learn stuff too! Here, the first year of insurance is especially expensive, but rates don’t become at all sane until the rider is 25 or older.
Starting on a 600 is not a good idea. It’s like learning to drive in a Porsche: Could be expensive, could be embarrassing, could be painful. You will learn both faster AND better on a smaller bike, preferably bought used. Most new riders will drop their bike once or twice, and it’s much more painful to scratch up a brand new one! Also, your insurance, repair and maintenance costs will be much lower–savings that can be spent on a good-quality helmet, jacket, gloves, boots.

There are several insurance companies now that do online quotes. You don’t actually have to be shopping for insurance to get quotes. You can enter data, then change one or two things and see how it affects the quote. So you can go to these sites, get a quote for 20 years old, 600cc, then change it to 250cc and see how that changes the quote.

My husband and both got bikes (R6’s) and we are in our 20’s.
Our bike insurance was $230 a month for 2 riders and 2 bikes. I’d say take that in half, but you’re a lot younger than we are, so you’re going to be higher, especially on a 600.
That price was with Geico, we switched to Allstate, and now it’s only $130 a month.
If you live in a state/location that has a winter (you know with snow and ice like Ohio) you can decrease coverage or "put it in storage" for a couple months to alleviate costs of insurance. So the quoted $2k/year might actually be $1500 over the year.
Price goes down when you turn 25.

Price depends on experience, age and size/type of the bike. Allstate doesn’t rate the bikes on type, just engine size. So if you have a 600 sport bike, you pay the same as a 600 cruiser. Other companies rate them differently, Geico rates them for the type of bike (which was why they were higher) since they figure if you’ve got a crotch rocket, you’ll probably drive like an idiot, and therefore more expensive to insure.

    Hope that helped some :)
    Ride safe!
