Read your policy and see if the animal is coverd first. If you don’t see what your looking for call the company. Mine was insured thru my homeowners but most aren’t. I have always had large, supposedly considered vicious breed dogs and was suprised to see that my homeowners did cover them. Also, check with your vet. They have info on pet insurance for both medical for the animal and incase of incident with the animal. Good Luck.

read your original policy and see what it says. if you do need to inform them, don’t mention the pit part. just say boxer mix (even though some lists have boxers on them as well as dozens of other breeds). you may need to take out additional coverage, or even change companies if they do not allow boxers.

Are you positive it is a pit bull mix? It seems that a lot of dogs who have a certain "look" are labeled at pit-bulls or pit-bull mixes. You probably do have to tell your homeowners insurance that you have a dog I suppose, but for the sake of your dog I’d call him a boxer mix or he may have to go right back to the shelter. I don’t think this is being dishonest and also, if you are a responsible dog owner, it would be a sad situation for your dog if your insurance is breedist (dog breed equivalent to racist?)

yes, because the varmint will eventually bite someone, and you will protect it, and say "not my poor little guy!" then later on he will bite some poor other little kid, and you will jump to the dog’s defense, and you will own the neighborhood terrorizer.

not sure if you should open that can of worms, get a copy of your policy and see what it says first. There should be details on dog coverage.

Wow, I hope not – but informing yourself is the right thing to do.
Taking the Canine Good Citizen test and having your dog earn that title certainly can’t hurt:

yes you should inform them, its not only about your own liability if something happen, but it will also bring your insurance rate down because dogs are considered an asset, and a protection for your home. Don’t think because your dog is a pit mix that that is something to worry about, i own two boxers and they are great, if i were to have a pit mix than a "boxer" would be the best cross! congrats on your new dog!

I own two pitbulls and we cannot get homeowner’s insurance. I’m in SC, so I don’t know if it’s a state specific thing or not. I’ve also known people whose insurance was canceled by the company once they found out about the pitbull.

yes you do call the because just if (you never know what could happen) then you are covered. but to be on the safe side i would just tell them that you have a boxer mix. Some homeowner insurances will drop you if you have a pit mix. i own an am staff they are part of the pit family and I had to find new home insurance because they did not cover rots, pits, Doberman and wolf breads.

Unfortunately, yes.
Did you get any paperwork with the adoption of your dog? If so, does it say "boxer/pit bull mix"? Or does it just say "mixed breed" or "boxer mix"? If you have paperwork you would probably only have to report the breed that is listed there.
Check your policy to be sure, though.

Hi, In my country malaysia there is no such a thing. Just make sure you take good care of your dog and don’t let your dog damage the house by training them.

It wouldn’t hurt. Some companies give discounts for ‘watchdog’ type breeds. Some companies might penalize you. I have a boxer & boxer-rotty mix, and we get a $30 discount.
As the mother of a dogbite victim, I definitely recommend you reporting the dog to your insurance company so that you can get the appropriate coverages. My daughter was bitten by my mother’s dog, causing facial injuries, and the cost of her current medical bills is $11,000, and her future surgeries will be about $50,000. So $60k just in medical bills for a torn lip & ripped nostril….you want your insurance company on your side for something like that.

Just tell them it’s a boxer mix. Lots of companies will cancel you if you have a pit.
