Is a person entitled to a refund of premium payments to a life insurance program if they are laid off or fired?

I recieved a check in the mail not too long ago from a life insurance company from one of my previous jobs for refund of premiums paid to them. This got me to wondering, is it the law that they have to refund this or they just being nice? I was paying life insurance in more than one job for several years and got laid off, so how can i get that back?

It always depends on the policy.
Getting money back on life insurance is unusual.

It is possible the refunded premium was simply a dividend from a mutual life insurance company. This would be normal practice, as a mutual life insurance company pays dividends when there is a surplus of premiums collected.
Other than that it would be a little unusual to receive an actual refund for a premium on life insurance unless there was some behind the scenes shenanigans you are unaware of and it turns out your were paying premiums for some specific time while not really covered.
