Do you get some kind of deal or something. Or is it just like having two different

An insurance company is not REQUIRED to give a discount if you have both home and auto with them, but I don’t know of any who DON’T. Some will give the discount off of either the home, or the auto, but MOST will give you a discount on both. I’ve seen discounts go from 5%, to 30%, depending on the company, and the state.

If you have car insurance, usually, you save MORE on the car insurance by buying a renters policy, and paying for both. Two, for less than the price of one.

Generally, yes. However, I found that it was actually cheaper to separate the two (I have progressive for car and State Farm for home). This was because I had been with progressive for over 12 years and the discounts I got for being a long time customer were greater than the combo discount. Just call a few places and ask for quotes on home, auto, and the two combined. Try State Farm, Progressive (only auto in most states), Geico (only auto), All-State and any others you may be interested in.

Usually yes, you get a discount on one or the other – just shop around to make sure that the discount is worth it…in my case, the auto discount was not enough to make up for the fact that the homeowner’s insurance was much more expensive compared to the existing coverage (I saved $400 by ignoring the auto discount and going with two companies).

yes – I just read recently that I believe ALLSTATE was going to increase homeowners insurance by 30% for customers that did NOT also have car insurance with them (or the other way around)

My carrier USAA offers a discount. So I would say yes.
