i had fire damage to my a/c unit and have had estimates done. if i file the claim and receive payment, minus my deductible, do i have to have the repairs done? i am in the state of tn

No, you do not.
But you don’t get the full cost of repairs, until AFTER you get the repairs done. You get DEPRECIATED cost of repairs.
Plus, if you have a mortgage, you can’t cash the check, because all claims over $2,000 must ALSO include the mortgagee on the check.
So it’s not like you’ll be able to pocket the money.

Most companies make the check payable to the person doing the work minus your part.

Sorry, I don’t know the answer.
But I will add that I would not have filed that claim unless it was a big loss. All claims count against your claims free discount and it may not be worth it. If this was a big loss then I would say go for it. But remember that a small loss should not be claimed.
