I am 28 years old and do not own a car. However, I rent car very often and every time the insurance cost is very high. Is there someway I could get an auto-insurance, say for 6 months or so at a time? What is the usual cost for it? What are the best agencies?

I would think that you would need to own a car to buy car insurance. I think you will have to keep buying it at the car rental place.

Simply using a decent credit card should cover you… The rental agencies push their own coverage, because it will spare you the headache and the paperwork of dealing with someone else — such as your credit-card issuer.
But finding your own insurer will not eliminate that headache. I say, check with the credit card whether you are covered and use it. Don’t give in to the renters’ scare-mongering.

Yes, have you tried actually calling any insurance companies and asking?
It’s normal for folks to have insurance that covers them on any car they drive. Call up Geico or Mercury and they’ll give you all the info.

No. I asked the same thing of my insurance agent at a time when I didn’t own a car, but was primary driver of a car owned by a relative. You must OWN a car to get car insurance and thus a policy that will cover you for rentals. All you can get is an umbrella policy and that will not cover an individual and their vehicle in most states.
