Auto insurance rates vary by region. Also, many companies now use your credit score as a factor in your rates. You also did not state what kind of insurance you are looking for.

"Best" is impossible to define without knowing your individual situation. If you have a lot of assets, you should buy higher limits of liability coverage to protect said assets against lawsuits in the event you are at fault in an accident. "Cheapest" would be finding the lowest cost for only the minimum required coverage in your state. So, the first thing you need to decide is…what types/how much auto insurance do you need, and then you can start getting quotes based on an apples to apples comparison.

In almost every state, Liability coverage is mandatory. You should also strongly consider buying Uninsured Motorist coverage, which protects you and your passengers in the event you are hit by an uninsured/underinsured or hit and run driver. You can also insure your vehicle for damage via comprehensive (fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, flood, etc) and collision (accident damage regardless of fault) Comprehensive and Collision insurance has a deductible. (how much you are responsible for). The higher the deductible, the cheaper the insurance.

Just call a local "independent agent" (they represent numerous companies) and also call some of the big companies like State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, Geico, Progressive, etc. to find the best price.

There are also numerous online quote services, but I prefer to deal with real people to get appropriate advice for my situation.

There are many factors involved in determining insurance rates, and you’ll need to provide a lot more information before anyone can accurately guess what your rates will be.
One determining factor is where you live, another factor is whether your car is parked in a garage or on the street when you’re at home. Also how far you drive to work every day and whether you’re a man or a woman. If someone else in the household has access to the car, that will affect the rates too.

Your best bet is to just start calling around to various insurance companies and getting quotes from each of them for comparison.
