I discovered recently that companies can take policies out on their workers. I’m curious how I can check to see if there are any outstanding policies on my life, not just from the company I work for, but in general.

    The only persons who can take out a policy on your life without your knowledge and consent are, as you stated, an employer, or your parents or guardians when you were a minor. In either case, you have no legal right to know and there is no way to find out.

    "Peasant Insurance" is legal (this is the phrase for workers).

    Outside of your family, no one else has an insurable interest.

    There’s no way of knowing and FYI someone (a non-family member) can take out ‘confidential life’ on you but this is usually a large dollar transaction involving the indemnification of a contract of sorts.

    You and I have a contract together and I want to make sure that if something happens to you I still get paid. If I don’t want you to know I can take a policy out on you usually up to one year and you wouldn’t know.

    You "discovered" wrong. You’re probably watching too many Michael Moore movies.

    Dead peasant policies (what those are called) were outlawed about 30 years ago in the USA. So your employer did NOT take out a policy on you without your full knowledge and consent.

    Regarding other policies, you have to sign off on them . . . and a paramedical examiner would come and ask you for blood, urine, and saliva samples. You might actually notice that – not many people DON’T notice someone jabbing a needle into their arm and asking them to pee in a cup.

    What you might be asking is, is there a website where you can type a name in, and find out if there’s insurance on that person. The answer to that is "NO!".

    But if you’re hell bent to be SURE that there are no life insurance policies out on you, what you do is pay $75 to the Medical Information Bureau, and send them proof of your identity, and they will tell you (and only you) what APPLICATIONS they’ve received on your life in the past 14 years. You can’t find out for someone else, only for you. And it only gives you applications received. Then you’d have to call each company to see if a policy was actually issued – and fax over proof of id, also.

    You can pay that $75 fee every year and go through the process every year, to make SURE that it doesn’t happen. But it’s a waste of money, because someone taking out life insurance on someone else, without their knowing, only happens in the movies.
