I would suggest looking into association plans from carriers, I am not sure if anyone does it any longer. Your problem is that your group is not considered a group to traditional corporations. (Independent Contractors- are not considered a employer/ employee relationship) which must take place to have a "true group".
And also your second hurdle will be the number, 50,000 is a very large group- so rates will not be guaranteed- they will be loaded rates, because of possible huge claims involved, and no prior claim experience.

i am in agreeance with the above answer: in order to have group health plan a employer/employee relationship must exists. Instead you can link with an independent agent and then refer theses contractors to the agent if they want individual coverage.

The normal rule of thumb is the larger the group the better the rate. I would check with your local insurance companies and see if they can give you a good price.
Also, if you are a member of your local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce, you may be eligible for discounts.
