Homeowners insurance is with a well known company…. would rather not say. A friend called them to verify what we thought and the insurance company said that was true….it would count against us. According to what we’ve read from CNN, this pertains to all insurance companies.

Homeowners Insurance Claim?
Our home was burglarized a few weeks ago. We filed a police report with a detailed list of stolen items and also filed a claim with our homeowners insurance. Our insurance agent told us that we would be notified by their claims department within 24 hours. We have never heard from them. Meanwhile, the thieves were caught and our property recovered. My immediate thought was to call our agent and tell him to drop the claim that the police had recovered our items. Then I found out that regardless, once a claim is filed, even though you don’t collect a penny, it goes against you anyway. Why should you get penalized for being honest? What should we do?

I don’t know why you should be penalized for being honest. It has happened to me. I talked to my insurance company to make sure I knew what to look for in a rented house to be sure my tenants weren’t conducting a mini grow-op which I think they were in spite of monthly inspections. A few months later they refused to renew my insurance because of "concerns about a grow-op", even though I’d had the police in after those tenants were evicted, and the police saw nothing to be concerned about. Last time I’ll ever ask an insurance company’s advice, or tell them anything unless they ask the specific question. That insurance company also said they would be raising my premiums(this was before they changed their minds and refused to renew) because there had been a charge against the policy. That was because I had an adjuster come in to look at some moisture damage which turned out to be not covered so I couldn’t make a claim.
Good luck talking to management. My insurance company denied they ever said anything about "concerns about a grow-op" when I asked them to remove such information from my file since it was baseless, claimed that they never shared clients’ information with any other company, and assured me that this info would not affect future policies. Yeah, sure.

What insurance company do you have?
No, it shouldn’t be held against you at all.
If you get no where with your agent, call upper management and demand that it not be held against you.
