I work for the company who I am buying life insurance from, I was wondering if they would deny my application for life insurance if thc showed up in my blood test or urine test. Also will my employer be able to see the results or just the underwriters??? I work for an insurance agent and got the policy in order to get some extra business on the books

Very simply, your application can denied for ANY reason. If the company doesn’t want to write your risk, they’re not obliged to.

Yes, they can deny your application.

It would be in your urine test and most life insurance companies would rate your as Tobacco Rate, so your application probably won’t be denied…it’ll just be expensive. As for your employment…hmmmmmm. I know that your results will only be shown to the underwriter, but the fact that you got the tobacco rate due to THC may be mailed to your office and will amend the applicaiton. Now I am an insurance agent, and i review all applications prior to delivery, but not all agents do that. You might get lucky but you’ll be rolling the dice regardless. Applicaitons need to be kept on file in your office for a long period of time, so that is a skeleton that I wouldn’t want in my filing closet/cabinet! LOL!

Techincally they can deny your application for a positive reading that you use pot. They don’t test for THC though, they test for a nicotine by product called Cotinine (any company I’ve ever dealt with anyway). If you deny that you use any kind of product they may do additional tests for THC or something to identify what caused the Cotinine reading though. Cotinine shows up as a result of using most kind of tobacco (cigars, cigarettes, marijuana, chewing tobacco, etc) and typically stays in your bloodstream/urine up to roughly 10 days (depending on how much you use the tobacco product). If you abstain from using it for 10 days it should be out of your system. That being said, I’m not suggesting that you don’t use for 10 days(it’s just for you’re info), take the test without disclosing that you use (or used in the past) pot just so you get approved. That’s fraud and NOT COOL at all!

Typically in most cases, a company will not decline an application for a Cotinine reading. It will usually end up being rating (meaning you will pay more premiums for the risk). HOWEVER, I did have a couple who did have their application declined becuase of it. I’ve also had other who were just rated. COMPLETELY depends on how much is in your blood system and if there are any other medical or other issues with you that could cause a problem with it (IE: you have asthma and you smoke even just a little…).

As for your employer knowing: Depends on their privacy policy and you’re position. For the most part, the only people that should have access to the information on the application would be the underwritters, the issuers, and the person that writes the application and delivers it. There’s no reason anyone else should really see it. Anything more would be an invasion of privacy. Depends on how strict the company is on drug use and what your position is. If you’re the CEO and the face of the company, I don’t imagine you’d be around for too long. If you’re just the guy that re-stocks the marketing materials and mops the floors, I can’t see them having an issue.
