It depends on what policy form you purchased and what the source of the water damage is.

Your best bet is to call your insurance agent and discuss it with him/her.

How could we possibly know what policy you carry? What coverages did you choose when you met with your agent and decided on the coverages? What company are you with? How did the water damage occur? When did it occur?

Call your agent, answer all of the questions above.

What is the source of the water? Typically, if it is water coming from the outside in, no, as that would be covered under a flood policy. If it is water on the inside, coming from a sudden burst of water, say a water heater that burst, yes. If it is water damage that is from a slow leak inside a wall, maybe – maybe not as this is a maintenance issue. I would have a discussion with my agent, ask them to review my policy, my source of the water damage and advise if I have a legitimate claim before I make a claim.

That depends on what you mean by "water damage." It does not cover flood damage; it would cover such things as damage due to a burst pipe.

Depends on what KIND of water damage, AND, what kind of homeowners policy you have.

The standard HO3 will cover water damage from a burst pipe or appliance as long as your home isn’t vacant or unoccupied.

NO homeowners policy will cover water damage from flood – flood is absolutely excluded.

SOME homeowners policies, for an extra fee, will cover water damage from backup of sewers and drains.

So, you’ll have to be a LOT more specific about what KIND of water damage – and what kind of policy. YOUR AGENT can give you an answer, as they know your policy!

Your Homeowners Insurance policy should cover water damage claims. It will pay to repair the damage but not the cause of the water leak.
