Depends on the state. In California, it is a condition of OWNING the car, but you exempt if you change your registration to non-operational with the DMV.

  2. Caribou "QUIT" Barbie™ Says:

    Yes

In most states, it is the law.

  3. Candi Says:

In Texas they can toe your car if they see it doesn’t have insurance even if it is parked.

  4. stygianwolfe Says:

    no,only registration.

  5. TheMom Says:

In my state you can’t renew your tags without proof of insurance, regardless if you drive it or not.

  6. Matthew Says:

That varies by state. I believe in my state if a vehicle is operable it must be insured whether you drive it or not but only the insurance companies try to enforce that. If you drop your insurance company they want proof of insurance from your new insurance company or they threaten to report you to the state.

  7. suthrnlyts™ Says:

Depends. Is the RV parked on public or private property? If it’s on private property and you don’t drive it, you don’t have to insure it.

  8. Obama W. Bush Says:

Because it is Government controlled the Insurance requirements vary from State to State and are very confusing

  9. B Knott Wildered Says:

Most states in the United States you are required to have insurance only if the vehicle is registered, meaning you have a current license plate on it. My educated guess is that is probably true in all states. But as a practical matter, if you do not drive it, even if it has a license plate, you will not be stopped so you are safe from being ticketed for it. The only time you are required to have insurance simply by owning it is when you owe money on it, and that is a business requirement, not a legal one.

  10. Mathsorcerer Says:

Auto dealers will insist upon you buying auto insurance before you drive the car off the lot. They do not want to risk you being in an accident and losing money.

If you let the insurance lapse after you get home, that is your own business. Just keep making the car payments.

You do not have to own auto insurance to drive the car…but you won’t be able to have it inspected or renew the registration without it. Even if those are not needing to be renewed, you may still *drive* the car *without* auto insurance. However, you should be prepared to pay a large fine if you are pulled over and do not have coverage.

So, technically, no–you do *not* have to have insurance to own or drive the car. Having a policy simply makes things easier for you.

Yes you do.If you ever drive it anywhere you definitely do.You want insurance in case anything happens to it,like fire or break ins,its in your best interests.

  12. sailormon Says:

Only if you drive it on public roads and if the note holder requires it.
