I am planning on getting a motorcycle and if it gets damaged I can accept that, so do I still need to (or can I just ride without it?)

    You most definately have to have insurance. They will not let you register it without it, so there is your answer.

    By law, you have to carry at least the state minimum liability coverage. Liability covers damage you do to other people’s property.

    Yes you do. Every motorized vehicle on California highways must be insured. The idea is so you can pay for the damages you may do to other people or their property. You also must wear a helmet.
