Do health insurance premiums go down if you get healthier?

I have health insurance and I quit smoking 4 months ago and lost 25 pounds. I am in my mid twenties and have no health issues or diseases. I am now height/ weight proportional and healthier than ever. If I let my insurance company know this, will my premiums go down?

Nope. They increase it every birthday. That’s their gift to their customers, an increase on your birthday. What a gift, right?!

I hate to say this, but unfortunately no. Many companies expect you to be non-smoking for 12 to 24 months before they consider you to be a non-smoker. If you purchased the insurance on your own, you could possibly look into purchasing a new policy with a new carrier. However, you will still not be considered a non-smoker with many companies until their time period of 12 to 24 months is up. Unfortunately you will probably have to still write a new policy ofter the time period because most companies will not come back and drop their premium.
I write for a few companies and have not seen any come back and reduce a person’s rate. We typically have to write a new policy. Many times it is the best thing to do any way because of their new health, they actually may qualify for a better and more cost efficient plan.

Health insurance premiums only seem to move in one direction; up. Try changing companies.

After you’ve stopped smoking for 1 year you can ask the company, in writing, to change you to non smoker rates. The best way to request it is with a new physical and blood work showing that you have no nicotine or coitine in your system, and with a new height and weight. Most companies will actually lower your rates if you do that, because you technically will qualify for a different underwriting class, and if they do not it will benefit you to change companies.
