Affect in terms of eligibility, premiums, etc. Must such therapy be disclosed, what rights does the patient have, do the providers of the therapy have to disclose such information? To what extent will life insurance companies go to find this information out?

I was turned down for life insurance twice by the same company. I am a teacher (aged 29 when I first applied), and I applied for a group plan available through my job for teachers in my state. The first year I was told I was declined because I was taking Celexa !!! I applied the next year and was declined again, same reason. My doctor wrote a letter saying I was not suicidal, etc. and that the meds were for panic attacks, but I was still turned down. I was furious at first – and I know so many teachers who take antidepressants….but there was nothing I could do except stop the meds. A rep told me to "show improvement" by the next enrollment period, but I didn’t want to stop taking my meds just to get the insurance. I found out that group insurance is usually much more strict because the rate is pretty low. I went to Allstate on my own and had no problem getting a policy. They were surprised that the Celexa kept me from being insured with the other company…. I checked with another company too, and could have gotten insurance there, but went with Allstate because it was the best deal.

This is just my opinion, but….About your disclosure – I’d tell everything up front. They will find out, and it is better if it comes from you up front and honestly. I think health care providers will tell – I think you sign a waiver giving the insurance company permission to review your health records.

It all depends on the company and there policies…look into the company 1st than you’ll know if it will effect you some do because there is usually a suicide clause
