Only if the insurance company providing coverage is licensed to write policies for and in the state in which you reside. Check with you state’s insurance commissioner (state government office) to make sure.

If you’re trying to get a lower rate that way, it might be considered insurance fraud. Insurance laws vary from state to state, and premiums are based on risk factors which vary depending on where you do most of your driving.

You must have insurance in the state the car is registered and titled in. You must have a valid and legal address of residence when you apply/buy insurance for the state of registration/title

Yes indeed that is true, in order to have insurance written by a company headquartered in another state other then where you live and drive, they must be licensed to underwrite insurance in that state you live and drive in.
